What Is HYPE Token? Everything You Need to Know

The HYPE token is the native cryptocurrency of the Hyperliquid ecosystem, a blockchain network built around high-performance decentralized trading and on-chain financial applications.

HYPE is more than a token that can be bought and sold. It plays an important role in network staking, validator security, HyperEVM gas fees, trading fee discounts, and decentralized finance (DeFi). As the Hyperliquid ecosystem continues to expand, HYPE serves as the economic asset connecting traders, validators, developers, and applications across the network.

This guide explains what HYPE is, how it works, its major use cases, tokenomics, staking system, and the key risks to consider.

What Is HYPE Token?

HYPE is the native token of Hyperliquid, a Layer-1 blockchain designed primarily for decentralized financial markets.

Hyperliquid originally became widely known for its decentralized perpetual futures trading platform. Unlike many decentralized exchanges that depend heavily on external blockchain infrastructure, Hyperliquid operates its own blockchain and provides an on-chain order book.

Within this ecosystem, HYPE serves several purposes:

Securing the Hyperliquid network through staking

Rewarding participants who delegate HYPE to validators

Paying transaction fees on HyperEVM

Providing trading fee discounts based on HYPE staking

Supporting DeFi applications built within the ecosystem

Serving as a core economic asset across Hyperliquid

This makes HYPE both an ecosystem token and a native blockchain asset.

Understanding the Hyperliquid Ecosystem

To understand HYPE, it helps to understand how Hyperliquid is structured.

The Hyperliquid blockchain contains two major components: HyperCore and HyperEVM.

HyperCore

HyperCore is the native financial infrastructure behind Hyperliquid.

It supports functions such as perpetual futures trading, spot trading, staking, and other blockchain-native financial operations.

The goal is to provide the performance associated with centralized trading platforms while maintaining an on-chain architecture.

HyperEVM

HyperEVM is Hyperliquid's Ethereum-compatible smart-contract environment.

It allows developers to build decentralized applications using familiar Ethereum tools while benefiting from Hyperliquid's blockchain infrastructure.

Importantly, HYPE is the native gas token of HyperEVM. Users therefore need HYPE to pay gas when interacting with applications and smart contracts on HyperEVM.

What Is HYPE Used For?

The utility of HYPE is one of the main reasons the token is important to the Hyperliquid ecosystem.

1. HYPE Staking

HYPE can be staked to validators that participate in securing the Hyperliquid network.

Hyperliquid uses delegated proof of stake. Users can move HYPE from their HyperCore spot account into a staking account and then delegate their tokens to validators.

Validators produce blocks and receive rewards based partly on their delegated stake. Stakers can also receive rewards for participating.

According to Hyperliquid's documentation, staking rewards accrue every minute and are distributed daily, with rewards automatically redelegated.

This means HYPE has a direct role in maintaining network security rather than existing purely as a speculative token.

2. Paying HyperEVM Gas Fees

HYPE is also used to pay transaction fees on HyperEVM.

This is similar to the role ETH plays on Ethereum.

Whenever users perform actions that require HyperEVM transactions—such as interacting with smart contracts—they need the native gas asset.

For example:

Ethereum → ETH for gas

HyperEVM → HYPE for gas

Hyperliquid's official documentation confirms that HYPE is the native HyperEVM gas token and that mainnet uses Chain ID 999.

As more applications are built on HyperEVM, this gives HYPE utility beyond Hyperliquid's core trading platform.

3. Trading Fee Discounts

HYPE staking can also provide benefits to active Hyperliquid traders.

Hyperliquid currently offers staking-based trading fee discounts. The discount increases according to the amount of HYPE staked.

For example, the documented tiers range from a 5% discount for more than 10 HYPE staked to a 40% discount for more than 500,000 HYPE staked.

Because fee structures can change, users should always check the latest Hyperliquid documentation before calculating expected trading costs.

4. DeFi Utility

HYPE can also be integrated into decentralized applications.

As HyperEVM supports Ethereum-compatible smart contracts, developers can build applications such as:

lending protocols, decentralized exchanges, liquidity platforms, yield applications, derivatives protocols, and other DeFi services.

HYPE can potentially function as collateral or as an underlying asset within these applications.

This means HYPE's utility can expand as the HyperEVM ecosystem grows.

How Does HYPE Staking Work?

The basic HYPE staking process is relatively straightforward.

A user starts with HYPE in a HyperCore spot balance and transfers it into t
