What Is HYPE?
HYPE is the native cryptocurrency of the Hyperliquid network.
The token launched alongside Hyperliquid's Genesis distribution on November 29, 2024. Approximately 31% of the original maximum supply was distributed to eligible users based largely on their previous participation in the ecosystem. The original maximum supply was set at 1 billion HYPE.
Unlike tokens that primarily exist for speculation, HYPE has several functions within Hyperliquid. These include staking, securing the network, paying HyperEVM gas fees, receiving trading-fee discounts, and participating in different parts of the ecosystem.

What Is Hyperliquid?
Hyperliquid is a decentralized trading and blockchain ecosystem designed around high-performance on-chain financial markets.
One of its best-known products is its decentralized perpetual futures exchange. Instead of relying primarily on an off-chain order book operated by a centralized exchange, Hyperliquid provides an on-chain trading environment built around its own blockchain infrastructure.
Its ecosystem can broadly be divided into two important components:
HyperCore provides the core financial infrastructure for features such as perpetual futures, spot markets, staking, and other native functionality.
HyperEVM provides Ethereum-compatible smart-contract functionality, allowing developers to build decentralized applications while interacting with assets and liquidity within the broader Hyperliquid ecosystem.
HYPE connects these different parts of the network.

What Is HYPE Used For?
HYPE has several practical uses.
1. HYPE Staking
One of HYPE's primary functions is staking.
Users can transfer HYPE from their HyperCore spot balance into their staking balance and delegate the tokens to validators. Validators participate in securing the network and producing blocks.
Hyperliquid uses delegated proof-of-stake mechanics, and staking rewards are distributed to participants. According to Hyperliquid's documentation, rewards accrue regularly and are automatically compounded when distributed.
This gives HYPE an important role in the security and operation of the blockchain.
2. HyperEVM Gas
HYPE is also the native gas asset of HyperEVM.
When users interact with smart contracts or decentralized applications running on HyperEVM, HYPE can be used to pay transaction costs.
This is similar to ETH being used for gas on Ethereum.
As the HyperEVM ecosystem develops, increased smart-contract activity can therefore create additional utility for HYPE.
3. Trading Fee Discounts
Holding HYPE is different from staking it, and staking can provide another benefit for active Hyperliquid traders: trading-fee discounts.
Hyperliquid currently uses staking tiers where larger amounts of staked HYPE can qualify users for progressively higher trading-fee discounts.
For example, the official fee documentation lists tiers ranging from more than 10 HYPE staked to more than 500,000 HYPE, with corresponding discounts ranging from 5% to 40%. These parameters can change, so traders should check the current fee schedule before making decisions.
This creates a direct connection between the token and trading activity on Hyperliquid.
4. Network and Ecosystem Utility
HYPE can also be incorporated into applications built around Hyperliquid.
For example, HYPE may be used as collateral or integrated into DeFi applications operating on HyperEVM. This means its utility can expand as developers build additional lending, liquidity, trading, and financial applications.
Certain network features also require substantial HYPE staking. Hyperliquid's documentation, for instance, describes staking requirements for permissionless spot quote assets.
Understanding HYPE Tokenomics
